COLEMAN ARCHITECTS PTY LTD WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2009 BY ARCHITECT AND HERITAGE CONSULTANT IAN COLEMAN, BRINGING 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TO AN ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE THAT COMBINES ARCHITECTURAL SKILLS AND CREATIVITY WITH HERITAGE EXPERTISE.  WE PROVIDE PRIVATE, PUBLIC AND INSTITUTIONAL CLIENTS THE BENEFITS OF FLEXIBILITY, INNOVATION AND CLIENT-FOCUS THAT A SMALL ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE CAN PROVIDE.

Design philosophy

We have a passion for our built heritage and for the design of stimulating and sustainable buildings and combine them in our work. We believe that the “sense of place” embedded in our heritage buildings contributes significantly to the richness of our community and that some of the most effective architectural outcomes can be derived from the creative utilisation of heritage buildings in new projects. Unlike many who regard heritage buildings as a liability or an obstacle to development, we see every project involving a heritage building as an opportunity.

We respect the past through thorough evaluation of the cultural significance of heritage buildings, embrace the present by developing designs that respond to the context and client requirements, and ensure the future through sustainable solutions.

Heritage services

We provide specialist heritage services including Heritage Assessments, Conservation Plans and Heritage Impact Assessments as well as Design and Conservation Advice. Coleman Architects is one of the few practices in Victoria providing specialist in-house heritage consulting services alongside the gull range of architectural services.

sustainability

We believe that retaining and adapting existing buildings for new uses is one of the most significant contributions that can be made to sustainability in the construction industry. We take pride in our ability to create solutions that respect the heritage values of buildings whilst significantly improving their environmental performance.

Site potential analysis
& masterplanning

We recognise that many owners and property managers struggle to identify viable uses for heritage buildings. We therefore provide a complete Site Potential Analysis service to assist in this area. We thoroughly analyse the physical and cultural aspects of the heritage building, explore and evaluate the limitations and opportunities presented, and develop viable and sustainable long-term solutions that may then be developed, either in a single stage, or carefully developed over a period of time to a masterplan.

We work with, and co-ordinate as required, other consultants that may be required for a project including: surveyors, archaeologists, structural, civil and services engineers, interior and landscape designers. All our projects are collaborative exercises drawing on the expertise and experience that each person brings to the project. Our projects integrate architecture, interior design and landscape to create solutions that provide lasting contributions to their environment and are stimulating places in which to live and work.

We provide our clients with:

Thorough analysis of the constraints and opportunities of a project

Guidance through the regulatory, design and construction process

Design solutions that creatively but pragmatically respond to the brief

Projects that respond to the site context and make a contribution to the built environment

Solutions that are sustainable and enhance the long-term cultural relevance of heritage places
